If you’ve been in the LA vegan food scene for a few years, you’ll likely recognize the name Baba’s Vegan Cafe, which has been popping up in South Los Angeles for almost a decade. Earlier this month, Baba’s Vegan Cafe opened the doors to their first brick-and-mortar location at 67th and Western.

Vegan Soul Food in Leimert Park

For years, Baba’s Vegan Cafe has been serving up authentic soul food and homemade Jamaican-style veggie patties at festivals, farmers markets, street fairs, and neighborhood pop-ups across South Los Angeles. Owner, head chef, and community activist Wo’se Kofi has been on a mission to provide healthy food to the neighborhood—particularly the Leimert Park area, which is an African Diasporic culture hub.

Kofi’s stuffed veggie patties have been his claim to fame, with customers showing out everywhere from weekly Torrance farmers markets to their weekly Sunday pop-up in Leimert Park to give the patties a try. Wrapped in a wheat crust and filled with a variety of flavors, including Curry Potato and Sweet Yam, these patties have been a staple in the community for years.

Vegan Soul Food, Raw Food, and Catering

Baba’s Vegan Cafe’s new brick-and-mortar is located at 6619 S. Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90047 and is open from 2-7pm Tuesday through Friday. The cafe will be keeping its spot as a vendor at Leimert Park Village every Sunday from 2-6pm.

The cafe offers a variety of side dishes that will change daily, including okra and tomatoes, vegan mac ‘n’ cheese, and black-eyed peas. For the main entrees, rotating flavors of veggie patties will be available, as well as several raw vegan dishes such as carrot tuna and sunflower seed pate. The current special is the Welcome Plate, which comes with Lentil Fritters with cashew cream, Kale Salad, Vegan Mac, beans, rice, and house-made hot sauce.

Aside from offering a full dine-in and take-out menu at the store, the cafe will also be offering catering and meal-prep services. Visit BabasVeganCafe.com to browse the menu, place your online order, and stay updated with the latest Babas Vegan Cafe news.
