Miami – Saturday at the Vegan Block Party—a festival with food vendors, drinks, music and other entertainment, and animal adoptions—which is taking place at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, PETA will erect a massive mural dedicated to Lolita, the lonely orca at the Miami Seaquarium, which is just half a mile away.

The display will point out that Lolita has spent more than 50 years trapped in the smallest orca tank in the world, where—according to the recently released scathing federal inspection report that I had passed along earlier this month—she’s recently suffered from eye lesions, been fed partially decomposed fish, and been forced to perform tricks that had likely injured her, among numerous other issues.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information about PETA’s investigative newsgathering and reporting, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
