Springfield, Mo. – “My Life Is in Your Hands” is the message that everyone, including country star Luke Bryan and NASCAR champion Noah Gragson, will see outside the World’s Fishing Fair, courtesy of a PETA billboard that will circle the 50th anniversary event at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World all day Saturday.

“Fish are animals with feelings like any other and experience pain just as much as the person on the end of the line, yet anglers impale, suffocate, and gut them while they’re still conscious,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA encourages everyone to steer clear of this spectacle of suffering and choose to amuse themselves without hurting others.”

According to ecological experts, if current trends of fishing and pollution continue, most sea life faces depletion by 2050. More than 700,000 tons of fishing gear is left behind every year, killing and mutilating millions of sea animals, and over a thousand species of fish are at risk of extinction worldwide.

PETA notes that many faux-fish options are available today, such as Gardein’s f’sh filets, fish-free tunafrom GoodCatch,New Wave Foods’ new plant-based shrimp, and Sophie’s Kitchen’s Plant-Based Crab Cakes.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
