Norfolk, Va. â Now that 47% of Americans want to incorporate more vegan foods into their meals, this Thanksgiving is poised to be the most vegan one yet. So to help holiday hosts plan their menus, PETA has compieled the Top 10 Vegan Pies served across the country.
Here are the winners, from coast to coast:
- In the Western U.S., the perfectly seasoned Spiced Pumpkin Pie from Corina Bakery in Tacoma, Washington, takes the cake. The Key Lime Pie from Sweet Hazel & Co. in Murray, Utah, also nabbed a spot for its sweet-and-tangy custard topped with fresh dairy-free whipped cream.
- In Americaâs heartland, winners include the Blackberry Raspberry Pie from Stockholm Pie and General Store in Stockholm, Wisconsin, with its famous, flaky vegan double crust; the spiced and creamy Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie from Sinfull Bakery in Houston; the Pecan Pie Tart from Ezraâs Enlightened CafĂ© in Indianapolis, featuring rich dates and a sweet-and-salty pecan-walnut crust; and the Sweet Potato Pie from Southern Roots Vegan Bakery in San Antonio, with a tasty custard combining fresh sweet potatoes and spice.
- On the East Coast, winners include the Dutch Apple Pie with cinnamon and brown sugar from MoâPweeze Bakery in Denville, New Jersey; the bourbon-infused Peach Pie with a Crumble Top from Colâs Kitchen in Concord, New Hampshire; the Sweet Potato Coconut Pie from Clementine Bakery in Brooklyn, New York; and the Chocolate Cream Pieâdark chocolate and oat milk in a flaky crust, topped with aquafaba whipped creamâfrom Bonafide Bakeshop & Cafe in Apex, North Carolina.
âThese decadent desserts dish up plenty of holiday flavor without a single egg or splash of milk,â says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. âFrom peach to pumpkin to pecan, PETA celebrates all the vegan pies that make it easy to enjoy a delicious ThanksVegan feast that leaves chickens and cows in peace.â
Not only are vegan desserts free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol, they also spare animals immense suffering: In the dairy industry, calves are torn away from their mothers shortly after birth, and in the egg industry, parts of chickensâ beaks are cut off with a hot blade when theyâre just a few days old.
Each eatery will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers free vegan Thanksgiving recipes on its website.
PETAâwhose motto reads, in part, that âanimals are not ours to eatââopposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
