Homemade CBD dog treats are an easy way to deliver high-quality CBD oil to your dog. Plus, they tend to be a lot more cost-effective than buying commercial CBD dog treats. And you have more control over how concentrated the treats are and what ingredients go into them.

CBD dog treats, in case you don’t know, are any soft or hard dog treats that contain broad-spectrum CBD oil.

Because dogs love the taste of CBD pet treats, I’ve found they are a lot easier to give to dogs compared to plain CBD oil. Below, you’ll find nine of my favorite CBD treat recipes along with some helpful tips and tricks for making and using CBD dog treats.

Things Required to Make CBD Dog Treats

  • CBD oil – Any high-quality, pet-safe CBD oil will do. (HINT: If you plan to use these treats to calm your pup down, check out CBD For Dog Anxiety to find the best oils for stressed-out pups.)
  • Blender or food processor
  • Parchment paper
  • Cookie cutters (bone-shaped if possible)
  • Cookie sheet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling pin
  • Silicone molds

How to Make CBD Dog Treats

Each of these recipes uses different flavorings and base ingredients to provide a variety of dog treat options. This way, you can choose the best recipe (or recipes!) to meet your needs.

  7. Coat each ball in the coconut.
  8. Place each ball on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.

  3. Place rolled oats in a food processor and grind until they reach a near-flour consistency.

Guidelines for Using Homemade CBD Dog Treats

When giving your dog homemade CBD treats, there are some important guidelines to follow.

First, it’s important that you only give your dog enough treats to fulfill their daily recommended dosage of CBD. To find out what that is for your dog, check out CBD Dose For Dogs to find how much CBD is suitable for your doggo.

Second, you don’t want to just use just any CBD oils in your pet’s treats.

Any CBD oils you use must be safe for pets. This means they need to be THC-free or have less than 0.3% THC in them.

If you’re using CBD for a specific issue, such as joint pain, epilepsy, or cancer, try finding a CBD product rated for treating that issue. For instance, if your dog needs help staying calm while you’re away, you may want to choose one of from CBD For Dogs Separation Anxiety products.

Instructions for Making CBD Dog Treats

cbd dog treat recipe

There are a ton of ways to make CBD dog treats. But there are also some important rules to follow to ensure your homemade CBD treats are safe for your dog.

Don’t Ever Use Xylitol

Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol sometimes used in baking to reduce the sugar content of baked goods. But this sweetener is extremely toxic to dogs.

Don’t Heat CBD Oils

You’ll notice in our recipes above that we always add CBD oil after the treats come out of the oven. This is because heat deactivates CBD and the other helpful compounds in hemp oil.

Preserve Your Dog’s CBD Treats

The best way to preserve your dog’s CBD treats is to store them in a container in the fridge. Most treats stored this way will last one to two weeks.

For longer-term storage, place treats in a sealed container in the freezer for up to six months.

Is CBD Oil Considered Safe for Dogs?

Not all CBD products are safe for dogs. Many full-spectrum hemp oil products contain high amounts of THC, which is toxic to pets.

Broad-spectrum CBD typically contains less than 0.3% THC, which is safe for dogs.

CBD Health Benefits for Dogs

CBD has a range of potential health benefits for dogs, including:

  • Pain management
  • Anxiety reduction
  • Endocrine system balance
  • Allergy reduction
  • Seizure relief
  • Cancer treatment support

Are Homemade Treats Worth It?

Homemade CBD treats take time to make, but they’re often a more economical option.

Many commercial CBD treats cost as much as CBD oil while containing far less CBD. By making your own treats, you can save money and ensure your dog is getting the exact amount of CBD they need to see results.
