The 2023 Iditarod race is scheduled to start on March 4, and vulnerable dogs will be forced to run nearly 1,000 miles through extreme, freezing conditions. Every dog will be at risk of becoming irreparably harmed or even dying. During last year’s race, nearly 250 dogs were pulled off the trail due to exhaustion, illness, or injury—and officials shamefully fined mushers who took dogs inside to protect them during a potentially deadly storm. The “winner” proudly shared videos of his dogs covered with snow and ice, their eyes “all frozen shut.”

More than 150 dogs have died in Iditarod races, most commonly from aspiration pneumonia, caused by inhaling their own vomit. Thousands of dogs are bred for racing. “Surplus” dogs who don’t make the grade may be shot or bludgeoned to death, while others are kept constantly chained to dilapidated boxes or plastic barrels in all weather extremes.

Nearly every major sponsor—including Millennium Hotels and Resorts, ExxonMobil, Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo, and Alaska Airlines—has already cut ties with the Iditarod. Yet some companies, including Liberty Media, are still sponsoring the cruel race.
