Charleston, S.C. – “We Want You to Change.” That’s the message a larger-than-life goat, cow, and alpaca have for holiday shoppers, courtesy of PETA’s wraparound bus ad, which will roll directly past the city’s three Urban Outfitters brands’ stores, including Anthropologie and Free People. Consistently ranked a top college town in the South, Charleston is home to many young people interested in sustainable and ethical fashion.
“Urban Outfitters wants to appeal to progressive young people, but it’s missing the mark by selling bags, shoes, and sweaters made of animals’ stolen skin and fleece,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is encouraging kind shoppers to offer peace and goodwill to all by choosing vegan gifts.”
The bus ad is part of PETA’s international campaign urging Urban Outfitters and its brands to ditch materials from animals. PETA entities’ investigations have revealed that workers leave sensitive goats with bloody, gaping wounds at cashmere operations; burn, electroshock, beat, and slaughter cows for leather; shear alpacas so roughly that the animals spit and vomit in fear; and abuse animals in other ways.
