The fast-food chain has unveiled their first ever vegan patty, the McPlant Burger
McDonald’s has finally uncovered details about their long-awaited vegan McPlant Burger, with the new offering unveiled at an exclusive tasting event, which Vegan Life were invited to.
The McPlant Burger trial will commence in 10 Coventry restaurants from 29th September, and a further 250 plus stores from 13th October, with a view to rolling out nationwide in 2022.
The exciting McPlant patty was co-developed by McDonald’s UK and Ireland with plant-powered meat brand, Beyond Meat, and has been described by McDonald’s as something that ‘will appeal to all burger lovers’.
Inside a vegan sesame bun, alongside the delicious Beyond patty, you’ll find mustard, ketchup, vegan sauce, fresh onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato and an innovative pea-based vegan cheese (that apparently ‘tastes just like McDonald’s iconic cheese slices’).
It is cooked separately from other McDonald’s burgers and sandwiches using dedicated utensils. It will also be priced at the same value as McDonald’s Big Mac – at £3.49.
McDonald’s UK&I spent three years on research and development to bring the delicious plant-based offering to British and Irish customers, and every element of the McPlant was ‘designed with taste and quality top-of-mind’.
UK&I is the latest market to introduce the McPlant plant-based burger since McDonald’s officially unveiled its global McPlant platform in 2020. Based on feedback and expectations from local customers, the UK&I version of the McPlant is fully accredited as vegan by the Vegetarian Society to ensure it meets the highest vegan standards.
In a statement sent to Vegan Life, Michelle Graham-Clare, chief marketing officer, McDonald’s UK and Ireland said: “We’re so pleased to be finally launching McPlant in the UK and Ireland. As with every McDonald’s offering, we take our time to ensure it meets the highest standards and is something that all our customers will enjoy.”
“We are always looking for different ways to innovate and meet our customers’ needs, and with McPlant we have a delicious plant-based burger that will appeal to everyone. Whether you’re vegan or just fancy a plant-based patty, we’re confident you will enjoy the McPlant.”
The McPlant Burger news has been well received by animal rights charities across the UK, and follows animal organisation PETA’s petition which urged McDonald’s to add a vegan burger to its menu. Over 23,000 people signed the petition.
PETA director of vegan corporate projects, Dawn Carr commented: “Every person who chooses McDonald’s McPlant over a meat burger will spare gentle cows the horrors of filthy, blood-soaked slaughterhouses.”
“Now you can enjoy a McDonald’s knowing that no one died for your lunch – and the fries are vegan, too. We’re lovin’ it.”
