San Francisco â With National Seafood Month (October) just around the corner, PETA took the opportunaty to rank the Top 10 Vegan Sea Food Brands in North America, and local companies Kuleana and Jinka landed spots on the list! Kuleanaâs sushi-grade vegan tuna and nutrient-dense faux lox made from algae, koji, and radishes are available at PokĂ© Bar locations as well as Erewhon Market. Jinka dishes up delicious vegan tuna spread in a variety of flavorsâincluding Lemon and Dill and Spicyâsold at GTFO Itâs Vegan!, NoPigNeva.com, and Whole Foods.
âWe had fun tasting so many vegan items, and Kuleanaâs bagel-ready lox and Jinkaâs baguette-friendly tuna are off the hook,â says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. âPETAâs favorite brands will help anyone celebrate National Seafood Month while leaving sea animals in the sea, where they belong.â
Vegan seafood is free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol and prevents fish from being gutted on the decks of fishing boats, live lobsters from being dropped into boiling water, and crabs from being dismembered while still conscious. And vegan meats are more popular than everâsales increased 148% in 2020 compared to the year before, and 47% of Americans want to incorporate more vegan foods into their meals in 2021.
Other honorees include BeLeaf in City of Industry, California; Gardein in Richmond, British Columbia; Good Catch in Newtown, Pennsylvania; May Wah Vegetarian Market in New York City; and The Plant Based Seafood Co in Grimstead, Virginia. Each company will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers many vegan seafood recipes on its website.
PETAâwhose motto reads, in part, that âanimals are not ours to eatââopposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
