Spokane, Wash. â As guests arrive for a University of Washington (UW) alumni event on Tuesday, theyâll be greeted by a troop of masked PETA âmonkeysâ who will call on UW President Ana Mari Cauceâthe eventâs keynote speakerâto shut down the schoolâs Washington National Primate Research Center. The federally funded laboratoryâwhere experimenters cut into endangered monkeys and infect them with deadly pathogensâis notorious for allowing monkeys to die from strangulation, dehydration, starvation, choking on their own vomit, and mauling.
When: Tuesday, May 9, 4:30 p.m.
Where: Outside the University of Washington School of Medicine-Gonzaga University Health Partnership, 840 E. Spokane Falls Blvd., Spokane
âMonkeys have been sickened and died in horrific ways at the University of Washingtonâs primate laboratories and breeding facilities,â says PETA Senior Science Advisor Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel. âThis den of death and despair is a stain on UWâs reputation. PETA invites alums to join us in calling on the school to end its archaic, pointless experiments and embrace cutting-edge, animal-free research methods.â
PETAâwhose motto reads, in part, that âanimals are not ours to experiment onââopposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
