‘Monkeys’ to Rally at UW Alumni Event to Demand Primate Laboratory’s Closure

Spokane, Wash. – As guests arrive for a University of Washington (UW) alumni event on Tuesday, they’ll be greeted by a troop of masked PETA “monkeys” who will call on UW President Ana Mari Cauce—the event’s keynote speaker—to shut down the school’s Washington National Primate Research Center. The federally funded laboratory—where experimenters cut into endangered monkeys and infect them with deadly pathogens—is notorious for allowing monkeys to die from strangulation, dehydration, starvation, choking on their own vomit, and mauling.

When: Tuesday, May 9, 4:30 p.m.

Where: Outside the University of Washington School of Medicine-Gonzaga University Health Partnership, 840 E. Spokane Falls Blvd., Spokane

“Monkeys have been sickened and died in horrific ways at the University of Washington’s primate laboratories and breeding facilities,” says PETA Senior Science Advisor Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel. “This den of death and despair is a stain on UW’s reputation. PETA invites alums to join us in calling on the school to end its archaic, pointless experiments and embrace cutting-edge, animal-free research methods.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
