PETA mourns the passing of Dr. Susan Love—a scientific leader, a compassionate friend to all sentient beings, and a fierce advocate for the advancement of human breast health. She’ll be greatly missed.

Dr. Love knew that the best way to improve human health wasn’t through deadly experiments on animals. That’s why her charitable organization, the Dr. Susan Love Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, embraced human-relevant research methods. By 2009, it had adopted an internal policy that prohibited tests on our fellow animals. Non-animal research continues there today, as scientists explore how breast cancer starts in human tissue and identify ways to combat the genetic and environmental factors that increase the risk of developing the disease.

“What we learn from animals doesn’t always translate into how cancer develops in women,” Dr. Love once said.

That progressive stance earned the foundation a PETA Proggy Award (“Proggy” stands for “progress”) for Most Innovative Health Charity.

Dr. Love’s foundation also worked with PETA to develop a new public policy, adopted in 2023, explicitly stating that it does not “fund, conduct, or commission any tests on animals.”

We are saddened by Dr. Love’s passing but take some comfort in knowing that her scientific vision stands as an example for future generations to follow. Through her lifetime of achievements, she solidified her place on the vanguard of compassionate, cutting-edge science and aided others in their times of need.

Honor Dr. Susan Love by Urging Members of Congress to Embrace Superior, Animal-Free Science

We need all lawmakers to understand how much money the National Institutes of Health (NIH) currently wastes. Please send a polite e-mail to your members of Congress urging them to mandate that NIH stop throwing away taxpayer money on cruel, useless animal experiments and instead focus on modern, non-animal research methods.
