New York – Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding the five-year sentence handed down to trainer Jorge Navarro for drugging horses and peddling mislabeled drugs:
Jorge Navarro will eventually be let out of prison to pick up the pieces of his life, but there will be no starting over for the victims in this case—the horses, like X Y Jet, he “juiced” and killed. The people in racing who surely knew what was going on, if only from the shoes he wore that said, “Juice Man,” are just as guilty for looking the other way while this king of doping ignored state and federal laws, duped bettors, and caused horses to suffer and die. The public has made it clear that it won’t tolerate dying horses, and as long as racing protects criminals, the industry’s reputation will continue to disintegrate.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment or abuse in any other way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
