Providence Village, Texas – To honor the community for taking the thoughtful step of installing mesh barriers around its storm drains to prevent ducklings from falling through and drowning, PETA representatives will present Town Manager Brian D. Roberson with a Compassionate Town Award at the council meeting on Tuesday.

Where:    Town Hall, 1755 Main St., Providence Village

“Thanks to Providence Village’s foresight and care, vulnerable ducklings will be spared terrifying drowning deaths in storm drains,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is recognizing this compassionate community and encourages other towns to make similar efforts to keep animals out of harm’s way.”

Every year, PETA receives reports of ducklings who have fallen into storm drains. While some are rescued—and reunited with their anxious mothers—many lose their lives. Ducklings can drown quickly, as they don’t yet produce oil to coat their feathers for protection, which is why PETA recommends safeguards such as barriers or ramps around drains and sewer grates. The group offers additional tips for coexisting with animals on its website.
