Halloween is one of my favorite times of year. I can remember trick-or-treating around my neighborhood when I was younger, crunching leaves as I walked. Halloween signals that winter (and therefore, snow) is coming on the East Coast, and it gets me excited. Now, it could be that I was really just excited for snow days at school, but that feeling has stayed with me throughout my adult years.
Since I am the one giving candy instead of receiving it (getting older is a sham, huh?), I wanted to find the best candies out there while staying true to my values. I knew I wouldn’t be the only one looking for animal-friendly Halloween candies, so I ran into Target with my Mercy For Animals sweatshirt and got to reading all the ingredients on packages of candy so you don’t have to.

Mike and Ike
The spooky variety bags of these “fruchewy” candies contain three fun varieties: Original Fruits, Tropical Typhoon, and Berry Blast.
Yum Earth
Two words: vegan gummies. Unlike their animal-based counterparts, Yum Earth’s gummies are gelatin-free. Another plus: They’re organic.
Sour Patch Kids Halloween Zombies
This mouthwatering sour-then-sweet Halloween treat is great to share or enjoy alone!
Swedish Fish
Swedish Fish gummies are a delightful, gelatin-free treat. But some varieties contain beeswax, so check the label before purchasing.
Dots
Dots gumdrops are a classic. The new Ghost Dots pack has cherry, strawberry, lemon, lime, and orange candies, but they’re all the same color, so their flavor is a mystery!
Project 7
These gourmet organic candies from Project 7 satisfy sugar cravings without artificial ingredients. They contain 95 percent less sugar than regular sour straws while being a big favorite with kids!
Ghosts and Bats Veggie Chips
Normally, I’d leave this one out because it’s not a candy. But the chips are shaped into these cute little ghosts. I’ve never seen other chip brands do this, so the product gets points in my book.
Lovely Organic Lollipops
These delicious lollipops are available in three flavors—grape, pomegranate, and mango—and would be a big hit with the kids!
Smart Sweets
You may have seen these candies all over your Instagram feed! This low-sugar, naturally flavored, healthy treat comes in many popular varieties: Peach Rings, Sour Blast Buddies, Red Twists, and more.

From the packaging to the ads to the flavors, everything about this plant-based candy is fun!

The classic vegan treat never fails to impress!
Airheads

OK, so this one even made me stop dead in the aisle. These naturally flavored snacks include cherry, lemon, orange, and strawberry. They’re also nut-free, soy-free, sulfite-free, sesame-free, and organic. So if you have a school Halloween party, these are the ones to bring!

If you don’t know that Skittles are vegan, I’d swear you’ve been living under a rock. Taste the rainbow, for sure.
