New York â Following communications with PETAâin which the group shared that birds used for down may be force-fed or that their feathers may be violently torn from their bodiesâluxury hotel brand and management company Dream Hotel Group confirmed that it will buy only down-free bedding going forward. In thanks, PETA is sending the company a box of delicious duck-shaped vegan chocolates.
âGuests at Dream Hotels can sleep easy knowing that no birds were harmed for their luxurious down-free bedding,â says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. âAll of us at PETA are raising our glasses to this kind decision, which recognizes ducks and geese as individuals, not pillows or comforters.â
PETAâs investigations have shown that highly sensitive, social, and family-oriented ducks and geese used in the down industry face intensive confinement before theyâre slammed into crates and trucked to slaughterhouses, where their throats are cutÂŹâoften while theyâre still conscious. The down industry releases toxic chemicals, massive amounts of antibiotics, and fecal waste onto land and into waterways, harming workers, wildlife, and the environment.
Dream Hotels joins Moxy, AC, Loews, Club Med, Diamond Resorts International, Red Roof Inn, and several other hotel companies in dropping down.
PETAâwhose motto reads, in part, that âanimals are not ours to abuse in any wayââopposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information on PETAâs investigative newsgathering and reporting, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
